Most of the time I like the way that walls look when they are covered with photographs or artwork in varying sizes and styles but it can look a bit overwhelming. A brilliant way to get the same look without creating as much chaos is by hanging empty frames on a wall instead. It is also more cost effective than purchasing a variety of art pieces!

I'm liking this look especially when it's mixed with framed pictures like in the last image--lovely!
you have really good examples of how this look can work. i've seen not so good examples that just look kind of cheap. i think the key is getting interesting, quality frames that end up creating a design w/in themselves. i agree w/tanya, i like the last example best b/c they're mixed in w/pictures.:)
yay! i just picked up a nice, thrifted frame yesterday & was having a hard time figuring out what to do with it. maybe i'll just put it up by itself now!
I was thinking about doing a post about this as well! You found some ones I hadn't seen before! If I decide to do it I am definitely linking to this post!
i really love this look! now i just need to collect lots of antique frames! :)
ooooo love love it!! great images, so fun...so much potential with a project like this...it's like endless possibilities, oooh love it! x chantal
antique frames make such great designs! i am collecting them as well! i can't wait until i have enough to do a wall in my home!
I have never thought of that really. I may have to try this out!
This is a fun look! There are so many frames out there, that are pretty, they are art in themselves.
How strange. I would have never thought to hang pictures on the way with no pictures in them. I think I like it though. Just might take me a little getting used to. Hope you had a lovely weekend. Happy Monday!!
Interesting. In general, though, I prefer frames filled, even if it's with something cheap like an illustrated page from a book or computer printout of a great picture.
I agree that this look has to be accomplished correctly to achieve a 'put together' final product.
Your examples are lovely. I like how they've used the black and gold in the same space in the second two examples. Against the white it's quite dramatic.
I totally agree. I fell in love with the look of an ornate oval frame that was empty of any picture but did still have the glass. It is lovely.
I really like this look too. Plus, Amen to the cost effective part!
i've always loved this idea. i even set up a few like this in my sister's place last week. just resting on shelves, sort of overlapping each other.
Nice roundup! I've loved the look of empty frames in a series since I saw it in a friend's apartment. I think it'd be fun in a bathroom — where you probably shouldn't put art anyway with all the humidity.
